Carnelian is an orange to reddish brown chalcedony .  It can be found in a range from a bright hot fiery orange to a deep rich earthy reddish brown. 

Some of the oldest examples of human jewelry contain Carnelian.  It was probably appreciated not only for its beauty but also for the belief in its ability to protect and boost courage.
