The Magical Moonstone

Adel loves hunting for the most beautiful moonstones and has always been enamored with this mysterious gemstone. During one of Adel's gem-hunting trips to Jaipur, a friend shared with him a story he now likes to tell. Imagine each moonstone has a hidden "genie" inside who plays hide-and-seek with the beholder. No two people see the same thing in one moonstone because it reveals different colors depending on the light, angle, and what it is reflecting. Interested in learning more about the moonstone? Types of Moonstone

The color of moonstones can be separated into two categories: body color and "adularescence" or sheen color. "Adularescence" is when the surface exhibits ever-changing, white reflections that give this gem a glow. The more transparent the body color and the more blue sheen, the higher the moonstone value.

Moonstone occurs in a wide range of colors, and the most popular ones are rainbow, blue, and pink. Rainbow moonstone is actually a variety of labradorite that shows a rainbow adularescence. Blue moonstones are transparent with a blue tone on the surface. The most desirable moonstones have an intense blue color. Pink moonstones range in color from beige and light pink to peachy hues. Moonstones are usually cut in a smooth cabochon shape to maximize the stone’s glistening effect.

History of Moonstone

The moonstone has been known for many years and admired by cultures that believed the stone was created from moonbeams. Moonstones can be found all over the world, but the stone was first discovered in ancient Rome, where the Romans believed moonstone to be formed from solidified beams of moonlight.

Because of its glow, Eastern cultures associated the gem with good luck. According to ancient Hindu mythology, moonstone resulted from a battle fought between Lord Vishnu and the demon god Bali. After Lord Vishnu destroyed Bali, pieces of the demon gold then fell to Earth as various gems. Moonstone was a fragment of Bali’s eye. Moonstone was also believed to be embedded in the forehead of the god Ganesh.

On the first expedition to Mt. Kilimanjaro in 1918, the largest moonstone - weighing between 300 and 450 carats - was found. Unlike some gems, which can only be found in very specific parts of the world, moonstone is mined in a number of places: Madagascar, Australia, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Germany, Switzerland, and India

Moonstone happens to be an alternative birthstone for June, along with pearl and alexandrite. The gemstone is also associated with third wedding anniversaries.
